The County Government of Uasin Gishu, in collaboration with the City of Eldoret management, has initiated engagements with the business community to strategise on investment opportunities in Kenya’s newest city.
Eldoret was officially promulgated as Kenya’s fifth city by President Dr William Ruto in 2025.
Following this milestone, both the County Government and the City of Eldoret management are developing comprehensive strategies to harness the city’s vast business and investment potential.
How Eldoret plans to drive growth
Speaking during a roundtable forum with the Hindu Council in Kenya (HCK), Eldoret Chapter, County Secretary Philip Meli said the county and city administrations had begun structured engagements with the private sector to drive the growth and transformation of Eldoret City.
Eldoret City boasts a unique mix of investment-enabling factors, including its position as the economic hub of the North Rift region, a gateway to the East African Community, and a key logistics corridor serving Western Kenya.
The farming city is listed as the eighth in its contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“We are working on engagement frameworks that will focus on showcasing and harnessing the many opportunities available in Eldoret,” said Meli.
The meeting with the Hindu Community in Kenya focused on strengthening partnerships between the Hindu business community and both levels of government to enhance the business environment and promote sustainable urban growth.
Meli further assured stakeholders that the County Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr Jonathan Bii, remains committed to addressing concerns raised by the business community and delivering practical solutions through close collaboration with the City of Eldoret management.
Impact of the Hindu community in Eldoret
City Manager Elzeba Busienei commended the Hindu community for its long-standing contribution to Eldoret’s economic growth, job creation, and social development.
She noted that investments by the Hindu community, alongside those of other business groups, have played a significant role in the town’s growth and its eventual elevation to city status.
“Your (investors’) role in setting up businesses here and creating employment while at the same time changing the economic landscape of this City is something we are really proud of,” said the Manager, adding: “And because of that, we are walking together this journey, ensuring that you have the best environment to do business.”
HCK Eldoret Chapter Chairman Girish Khetia emphasised the importance of sustained engagement with the county government, noting that strong partnerships would lead to improved business conditions and better livelihoods for Eldoret residents.
The forum provided a valuable platform for dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding, with key issues affecting businesses and communities in Eldoret discussed for follow-up and action.
County Executive for Lands and Physical Planning Edward Sawe, Eldowas Managing Director CPA Dr Lawrence Tanui and Chair, David Sing’oei, Chief Officers Mary Kerich (Urban Planning) and Ambrose Tarus (Clinical Services), County Attorney Silvester Metto, as well as County and City staff also attended the event.
