A court in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County on October 27, 2022, sentenced a man accused of defiling a 9-year-old girl to life imprisonment.
The man who worked as a housekeeper was accused to have committed the criminal act on the night of February 18, 2022, in Berese village, Kiptuilong location, Keiyo North Sub County.
The accused, Edwin Kibet Koech alias Abraham also faced a second count of inappropriately touching the minor in her private parts.
Prosecutor Mercy Muema told the court that the victim was sleeping before the accused entered her room, removed her clothes and defiled her.
Further, the prosecution told the court that after committing the crime, the accused slept in the room until the following morning when he wanted to repeat the same act.
The girl informed her grandmother about the incident later in the evening after returning from school.
Later, she was taken to Soweto Hospital.
Given an opportunity to defend himself, Koech asked the court to forgive him, claiming he has a young family that depends on him.
In her judgment, Iten Principal Magistrate Virginia Karanja said the crime the accused was facing was grave, sentencing him to life in jail.
The accused has 14 days to appeal the ruling.
