Kenya, DR Congo Agree to Work Together in Health Sector

Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo have pledged to work together to improve health outcomes in the two East African countries.

A meeting between Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe and his DRC counterpart Dr. Jean-Jacques Mbungani Mbanda on Tuesday resolved to establish a technical team to develop guidelines on how best to enhance the partnership.

Speaking during the meeting, Kagwe said it was important that the two countries work together and address emerging health threats especially after DRC joined the East African Community.

We have been working closely from a regional approach. As Ministers for Health, we have been holding meetings as Kenya chairs the EAC council of health ministers. We will cooperate in all areas of medical care,” said the Health CS.

He noted that there was a need to develop local solutions to the health challenges facing the region adding that Kenya has already initiated a host of programs aimed at addressing existing gaps.

As part of the journey toward human vaccines self-sufficiency and to address the vulnerability of the country to future health emergencies, Kenya has already launched the Kenya Biovax Institute with Moderna Inc, an American pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, scheduled to set up a vaccine manufacturing facility in the country.

According to Dr. Mbanda, there was a need for the two nations two work closely to address existing health challenges.

Although we have been taken hostage by Covid-19, we should not forget other diseases such as Malaria and HIV and we need to think how we can work together around these as well,” observed Mbanda.

Among those present at the meeting were Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache and other senior officials from the two countries.
