Young people have been encouraged to actively seek leadership positions where they can influence policies that directly address their interests.
Speaking during a youth event in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member for Youth Affairs, Eng. Lucy Ng’endo, emphasized that the voice of the youth is crucial—and even more impactful when they occupy positions of influence.
Eng. Ng’endo noted that young people, as the most vibrant segment of society, should not shy away from vying for representative roles to effectively champion their causes.
She further observed that youth needs vary across regions and communities, and therefore require tailored approaches.
“The County Government is running several programs for the youth; however, because of the uniqueness of their needs, it would be better if the youth themselves were in positions where they can directly advocate for laws that address those needs,” Eng. Ng’endo said.
The CECM also urged young people to take a keen interest in understanding government policies and programs, describing them as key tools for empowerment.
She pointed out that the Uasin Gishu County Youth Policy provides a comprehensive framework to support young people through access to financing, training programs, job opportunities, and recognition of skills, including certification of apprenticeships.
Eng. Ng’endo reaffirmed that the county government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, remains fully committed to the youth agenda.
Among the key initiatives are the Governor’s Cup, youth empowerment training programs, driving school sponsorships, youth-reserved tenders, and loan facilities for business start-ups and expansions—all designed to empower young people and strengthen their participation in development.
