Kanza Member of Parliament Ferdinand Wanyonyi has called on youths who missed out on university and college placement to join Technical and Vocational Training Institutions so as to acquire post primary education.
Addressing hundreds of parents, students and other education stakeholders during the issuance of Ksh1 million cheque to Mutua Primary School in his constituency for renovation of classrooms, Wanyonyi said the government is also supporting students in TVET institutions.
“If you did not get a chance in our universities, it is not the end of the road. There are several pathways you can follow. One of the pathways is to join a nearby VTC, a TTI or even a National Polytechnic,” Wanyonyi said.
The MP who doubles up as FORD Kenya Deputy Party Leader further revealed that Kwanza Technical and Vocational College which is under construction will be completed by the end of the year and will start offering technical courses from 2024.
“Once the college is complete, our students who are interested in pursuing technical courses will not be required to go long distances to acquire the skills,” he stated.
Early this year, the Ministry of Education gave Kitale National Polytechnic the responsibility to mentor the institution based at Kwanza trading centre.
The Polytechnic needed Ksh60 million to establish Kwanza Vocational and Technical College.
John Akola, the Polytechnic’s Principal then said students should be encouraged to join TVET institutions so that they can gain practical skills.
“With these practical skills, any TVET institution graduate has been trained to job creators and not job seekers. Eventually, the unemployment rate and related social ills in the country will reduce,” Akola said.
Meanwhile, Kwanza Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Kavulu challenged parents to take care of their children during the ongoing two-week holiday.
In addition, he warned that any person found culpable of committing any sexual offence with minors will be dealt with accordingly.
“We are very alert and whoever thinks they can defile and impregnate minors in this Sub County should know the law will take its course. We shall deal with them ruthlessly,” Kavulu warned.
