Media Council of Kenya Urges Counties to Boost Access to Public Information

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on county governments to enhance access to information by ensuring timely and proactive disclosure of public records.

Speaking during an Access to Information compliance training in Nakuru, MCK Nakuru Regional Coordinator Joseph Mecha emphasised the need for counties to provide accurate and up-to-date information on their websites.

Timely access to information enables journalists to conduct thorough research and report objectively,” said Mecha.

To improve engagement, he urged the Nakuru County government to establish regular press briefings to facilitate direct interaction between journalists and county officials.

Katiba Institute Devolution and Research Lead Dr Henry Gichana underscored county governments’ obligation to maintain clear public records and proactively disclose information to enhance transparency and accountability.

Nakuru County Executive Committee Member for Public Service Jackline Osoro reaffirmed the county’s commitment to working with the media. She advised journalists to channel their information requests through the County Secretary’s office to avoid delays or misdirected communication.

The training follows concerns from journalists and the public regarding challenges in accessing information from county governments.
