Moi Referral Hospital (MTRH) Completes Pioneer Microvascular Nerve Transfer Surgery

The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital has announced a new milestone following the successful first Microvascular Nerve Transfer Surgery.

A statement on the hospital’s official Facebook page indicates that the hand surgery was completed following the deployment of the Pentero Neuro Microscope.

MTRH is the only health facility with such a microscope in the entire East African region.

The hospital further said the patient that was taken through the pioneer Microvascular Nerve Transfer Surgery was doing well after the procedure.

The male patient had Right Brachial Plexus.

The male patient who had Right Brachial Plexus Injury is doing well after surgery,” the hospital added.

A team that conducted the pioneer Pioneer Microvascular Nerve Transfer Surgery was led by Dr P. Mwangi, an Orthopedic Surgeon at MTRH.

Others involved were Dr Borschel G, a Chief of Hand Surgery at Riley Children’s Hospital Indiana, USA, Dr J. Look, Resident Hand Surgeon, at Indiana University) and Dr Vadgama Harsh (Orthopedic Surgeon MTRH).

Anaesthetist Ebby Lagat, Scrub Nurse Kevin Koech and Circulating Nurse Isaiah Sawe were also involved in the surgery.

Microvascular surgery or microsurgery is a surgical technique for joining or repairing the damaged blood vessels and nerves during reconstructive surgery of body parts. Reconstructive surgery restores the functioning of the body parts by improving circulation.
