Moi University Responds to Strike Notice Issued by UASU

Moi University management has affirmed its commitment to uninterrupted academic progression and the continued delivery of quality education.

In a statement that follows a strike notice issued by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the institution said it will always aim at resolving issues raised by its workers amicable.

When did UASU issued Moi University strike notice?

UASU issued a seven-day strike notice on August 12, 2025, signalling a troubled start to a new cohort of learners expected to report soon.

We acknowledge the concerns raised by UASU and affirm that the University Council and Management are actively engaging with the Union leadership, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant stakeholders to address the issues through constructive dialogue,” read part of the statement dated August 14, 2025.

Our objective is to resolve all matters amicably, in a manner that safeguards the welfare of staff while ensuring that learning and research activities proceed without disruption,” it added.

However, the university which has faced financial challenges in the recent years assured students, parents, guardians, and all stakeholders that teaching, examinations, research, and all academic programmes are continuing as scheduled.

This includes preparations for the reporting of our First-Year Students on Thursday, 21st August, 2025, which will proceed as planned,” the institution said, in the statement signed by the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kiplagat Kotut.

It also asked students to remain focused on their studies, and assured parents and guardians that “the academic journey of their children remains our highest priority”.

What are Moi University staff demands?

Among the demands listed by UASU in their strike notice is payment of their June and July Salaries as per the negotiated 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement rates.

The union also wants the Return-To-Work Formula signed between them and the University Council on November 30, 2024 to be honored.
