MTRH Marks 2024 World Cancer Day

The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) marked World Cancer Day on 4th February 2024.

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Philip Kirwa led the Hospital by flagging off the sensitization walk through the streets of Eldoret town with MTRH partners.

World Cancer Day, commemorated on 4th February annually, aims to raise awareness of fundamental cancer issues.

Between 2022 and 2024, the focus of World Cancer Day is to help “Close the cancer gap” with 2024 marking the third and final year of the campaign.

The theme for this year is: “Together, we challenge those in power” encompassing the global demand for leaders to prioritize and invest in cancer prevention and care and to do more to achieve a just and cancer-free world.

Dr. Jesse Opakas, MTRH’s Director of Hemato-Oncology, affirmed that the Hospital performs free cervical as well as breast cancer screening.

In his remarks, the Ag. CEO also urged Kenyans to go for screening stating early diagnosis is key to recovery & management of many types of cancer.

He further that technology has allowed for early detection of Cancer, easing the burden of care while increasing the chances of cure & survival.

MTRH Hemato-Oncology Directorate manages Cancer patients through a spectrum of care including screening, surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and radiotherapy; with the most common cancers being breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer in men, and colorectal cancer.
