NACADA Calls for Establishment of Rehabilitation Center in Kitale to Help Drug Addicts

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has said there is urgent need for establishment of a rehabilitation center in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

NACADA says the centre would help rehabilitate alcohol addicts.

Speaking during the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, NACADA’s Trans Nzoia County Coordinator, Teresa Mwangi, said drug addicts are in dire need of rehabilitation but they cannot get the critical services due to lack of rehabilitation centers in the densely populated County.

Alcoholism in Trans Nzoia

The recent survey released in 2022 indicates that Trans Nzoia is one of the counties that are hit hard by alcoholism.

While we need to invest in prevention, we equally need to invest in treatment and rehabilitation especially for those who are affected to the point that they need rehabilitation services. In our county we do not have a single rehabilitation facility,” Mwangi revealed.

She also called on the County government of Trans Nzoia to partner with the authority in setting up a rehab center.

While flagging off the NACADA team, Trans Nzoia County Commissioner, Gideon Oyagi stated that the raids his security and intelligence team has been doing across the county have bore fruits.

I want to confirm that in as much as we have not achieved the results we desired to achieve, raids to some extent are very effective in dealing with this menace. I also want to laud my security team for the sustained efforts and we shall continue mounting them,” Oyagi said.

Trans Nzoia chiefs directed to deal with illicit brewers

He urged his National Government Administration Officers (NGAOS) to deal with illicit brew dealers in their areas of jurisdiction.

He further stated that alcoholism and drug abuse has a direct impact on security.

There is a direct relationship between insecurity and illicit brew as well as other drugs. We can only have a peaceful county if we can completely deal with illicit brews in our society,” added Oyagi.
