Nandi Chicken Slaughterhouse Roars to Life

/

The first semi-automated Chicken Slaughterhouse in Nandi County finally roared into action late in March 2023.

Managed and operated by Poultry Farmers organised under Kochen Gei Poultry Farmers Cooperative Society, the facility will be providing high-quality chicken products to ‘Kuku lovers’ in the county and beyond, at affordable prices.

The flagship project of Governor Stephen Sang’s administration aims to economically empower poultry farmers, majority of whom are Women and Youth, by providing a ready and better market for their chicken.

On its first day of operation, the cooperative society received an order of 200 birds (both Kienyeji and Broiler) from Tityo Grill Hotel.

The official handing over of the facility, constructed by the County Government of Nandi through the support of the NARIGP project, to the cooperative society was witnessed by the new Chief Officer for Cooperative Development Caroline Lagat.

Speaking during the handing over, the CO said the abattoir will improve food handling and food safety as well as attracting more customers within the county and beyond.

Consumers will also be assured of food safety through provision of quality chicken products free from both physical and biological contaminants,” said the Chief Officer.

She also lauded the cooperative leadership led by their Chairlady Lenah Kitur and urged them to maintain high standards, competitive prices, and quality products.

CO Lagat also challenged them to recruit more members to meet the market demand for chicken.

Martin Shikuku Rotich, the secretary of the group, expressed his gratitude towards the NARIGP project and the County Government of Nandi.
