Vehicles on Kenyan roads will soon be fitted with modern number plates.
This is after the government unveiled the new number plates, which are in line with the amended Traffic Act of 2016.
Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Mariang’i led several top government officials in unveiling the new look plates on Tuesday, August 30, 2022.
The plates are being produced at the GSU Recce unit Headquarters in Ruiru, Nairobi.
Among the features in the digital number plates are a QR code, hologram, NTSA serial number and Kenyan flag.
Further, the plates have inbuilt security features that allow for the tracing of car ownership by law enforcement agencies.
“They form a basis for tracking and monitoring vehicles in the country which have risen significantly from 3.2M million last year to 4.8 million this year,” said Transport CS James Macharia.
Cost of digital number plates
On his part, Matiang’i said the introduction of the new plates is part of reforms meant to curb crime and fraud.
All new vehicles coming into the country will now be fitted with the new number plates.
“The work is being done by a multi-agency unit of the security sector and is part of the reforms initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2019 Dusit attack,” said the CS.
But for the vehicle owners that are using old plates, they will be required to replace them within the next 18 months.
Each replacement of the number plate will cost Ksh3,000.
“When the NTSA team calls on Kenyans to change the plates, let us obey and get it done within those 18 months,” noted the Interior CS during the unveiling of the number plates.
The event was also attended by ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General George Njao amongst other senior security officials.
