President William Ruto on Friday, September 18, 2026, hosted Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe at State House, Nairobi, as Kenya steps up preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
According to the President, Motsepe and his delegation were in the country to assess progress on Kenya’s preparations for the continental football tournament scheduled for June and July 2027. The visit included a review of ongoing sports infrastructure projects, with CAF reportedly expressing satisfaction with progress made so far.
President Ruto said CAF commended Kenya for the substantial work undertaken at the new Talanta Sports City Stadium and the ongoing upgrades at Kasarani Stadium.
During the meeting, Motsepe expressed confidence in the ability of the three East African nations to successfully stage the tournament, the President said.
How Kenya plans to ensure successful AFCON
On Kenya’s part, Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering a successful AFCON, noting that efforts were underway to ensure all required infrastructure is completed on time and meets the necessary standards.
“We are committed to hosting a successful event. Everything is therefore being done to make sure that all the necessary infrastructure is ready on time and at the required standard,” the President said.
He added that Kenya aims to use the tournament to showcase the country’s passion for football and its ability to host a world-class sporting event.
“We are committed to showcasing a classic football bonanza for Africa and the world. Kenyans will display their love, passion and talent for the game during the tournament,” said Ruto.
The 2027 AFCON will mark the first time the tournament is jointly hosted by the East African neighbours Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
