Researchers and innovators have been asked to prioritize practical and actionable ideas.
During the official launch of the 13th Annual International Research Conference at Eldoret National Polytechnic, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Ministry of Education Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria said that while traditional research has existed for many years, much remains theoretical, with limited real-world impact.
She further said there was a need for a shift towards research addressing societal challenges.
“My challenge to you is to focus on practical research. We’ve written a lot, but now we need to explore ideas that get published and have real-world applications,” Dr. Muoria remarked, emphasizing the importance of making research actionable.
She also reiterated the Ministry of Education’s commitment to ensuring that young people receive practical training.
She further highlighted ongoing efforts to digitalize the curriculum, particularly in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, which face challenges in equipping large numbers of students with hands-on skills.
“We are in the process of writing a proposal to COMESA to assist in digitalizing our curriculum and incorporating simulators to support innovation among our youth,” Dr Muoria added, underlining the goal of enhancing practical skills for young innovators.
The conference is themed “Competencies in Applied Research, Science, and Innovation for Sustainable Development.”
