Secret Behind Eldoret National Polytechnic’s Project 61 Successful Debut Season

Project 61 Rugby team had a fairly successful season given the fact that they were participating in the championship for the first time.

The team based at the Eldoret National Polytechnic enjoyed a winning streak that was only ended by Zetech Oaks.

This was and remains the only defeat the team tasted this season.

Project 61 head coach Sheldon Munoko said when establishing the team, their main goal was to emerge as the Rift Valley region champions and play in the playoffs.

Project 61’s championship experience

Munoko opened up to Uasin Gishu News on their experience in the championship.

Our goal was to play in the playoffs which we achieved. The games opened our capability to even perform better,” he said.

This season was planned strategically as we had a good recruitment strategy that boosted our power. Being a new team, we beat the odd,” he added.

Munoko also highlighted the strategies his team used to maintain cohesiveness cohesive and prepare for the season.

As a coach, I believe the key to a strong performance by any means is to foster open communication, providing a constructive feedback and empowering each team member to take ownership of their tasks,” he stated.

“I ensured I created a supportive environment between players where everyone feels valued and encouraged to contribute their ideas,” he added.

Despite missing out on promotion, Munoko is optimistic that the team will be better in the upcoming season.

Maintaining an unbeaten streak required a combination of strategic planning, consistent performance evaluation and adaptability,” he noted, adding that “We focused on continuous match and adjusting our tactics accordingly and most importantly the skill of resilience, flexibility and the value of a positive mindset in overcoming challenges and achieving long term success.”

Project 61 is now the only team that has had a successful debut season in the recent years.

Other notable rugby teams based in Eldoret include Eldoret RFC which was formed in 1924, Moi Arsonist – formed in 1983 and the UoE Trojans that was formed in 2009.
