Uasin Gishu County is betting on animal feed innovation and strategic partnerships to revitalize its dairy sector, aiming to double milk production and create jobs for residents.
Speaking during the commissioning of Silver Feeds, a new feed processing facility in Kapseret Ward, Chief Officer for Livestock Development and Fisheries, Nixon Cheplong, said the county is committed to working hand-in-hand with farmers and cooperatives to increase productivity and lower production costs.
“Our goal is to support affordable, high-quality feed production. If we can help farmers raise daily milk yields from five to ten liters, the cost per liter will drop, and profitability will rise,” Cheplong said.
The county government is pushing for improved leadership in cooperatives, urging leaders to steer clear of political divisions that have hindered progress in the past.
Cheplong also emphasized the importance of cooperative governance in ensuring sustainability and collective farmer success.
Uasin Gishu dairy improvement program
Uasin Gishu has rolled out a comprehensive dairy improvement program that includes regular vaccination against Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease, subsidized artificial insemination at KSh 500, and hands-on extension support.
The feed sector expansion is part of a broader plan spearheaded by Governor Dr. Jonathan Chelilim, who has prioritized agricultural transformation as a key driver of economic growth.
Representing the governor at the event, Dr. Pius Chumba highlighted plans to set up a milk processing plant in Kapseret, a move he said would add value to local dairy products and provide new income streams for farmers.
“Processing is the next step. It will not only increase the shelf life and market reach of our milk but also stimulate job creation and enhance economic stability in rural areas,” he said.
The event also drew representatives from neighboring counties including Nandi and Kakamega, who were recognized for their continued collaboration, particularly in the supply of quality dairy cattle and knowledge sharing.
The entry of Silver Feeds into the local market is expected to enhance feed accessibility and quality, further positioning Uasin Gishu as a regional dairy powerhouse.
