Aden Duale Commissions East Africa’s First AI-powered CT Scanner at Nairobi Hospital

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has commissioned East Africa’s first AI-powered 256-slice CT scanner at The Nairobi Hospital—an innovation set to transform diagnostic imaging and elevate patient care across multiple specialties.

The scanner, which offers faster, more precise imaging at lower radiation doses, places Kenya at the forefront of medical technology on the continent.

Speaking at the event, CS Duale also announced a strategic partnership between the Ministry of Health, the Social Health Authority (SHA), and The Nairobi Hospital to expand access to advanced oncology and renal care for eligible SHA patients.

Services will include subsidized brachytherapy, radio-iodine therapy, radiotherapy, haemodialysis, and kidney transplants.

Noting that over 11,000 Kenyans spent Ksh 14.7 billion on treatment abroad in 2024, the CS underscored the need to strengthen local capacity for non-communicable disease care.

He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving health workforce issues, with resources allocated in the 2025/26 budget to clear arrears and fully implement Return-to-Work Agreements.

Meanwhile, Duale praised The Nairobi Hospital’s commitment to equity through the SHA collaboration, calling it a symbol of innovation, compassion, and national unity.
