On a day when the Catholic faithful marked Christ’s entry to Jerusalem, Sosyo men’s team got the best gift for Jesus on Palm Sunday, winning the Karuna/Meibeki Ward Governor’s Cup Volleyball Tournament trophy in a final match played at Cheplaskei Primary.
In their match against Endau, Sosyo – a Kalenjin name of palm – and perhaps drawing blessings from the holy day, started by winning the first set 25-14, Endau bit their fingers to take the second 29-27.
Sosyo took the third and fourth sets, 25-20 and 25-22, winning the ward trophy with a 3-1 win in a best of five sets.
Karandili won the women’s category after beating Cheplaskei and Mogoiywo, fetching 6 points in a round-robin format. Mokoywo and Cheplaskei placed second and third.
In Moiben Ward, visitors Merewet and Sesia Vocational Training College won the men’s and ladies’ titles respectively, in a contest held at Toloita Primary School.
Merewet B and Toloita were second and third in the men’s table, with Moiben Centre and Moiben Technical Institute women occupying the second and third places.
Other winners
Chepkurmum men won the Ainabkoi/Olare Ward trophy, Kapng’etuny and Baharini finishing second and third. Kabore won the women’s category, followed by Kapkeno and Olare, in that order.
Kaptagat Ward’s men’s trophy went to Plateau. Ng’atit was too blunt and settled for second as their ladies won the other category, Rotuga coming home second.
Betafarm won the men’s category in Kimumu Ward, Ainabtich and London finishing second and third.
The ladies’ category registered a perfect opposite of the men’s result, with London winning, Ainabtich and Betafarm occupying the first three positions.
Uasin Gishu County Assembly Deputy Speaker, Sarah Malel, who graced the Kimumu Ward contest, said the county legislature will support the establishment of policies and programs to support youth and sports.
County Executive for Sports, Eng Lucy Ng’endo while also gracing the Kimumu Ward contest, said her department is working to implement Governor Jonathan Bii’s vision of youth empowerment and nurturing of sports talent.
Karuna/Meibeki Ward Member of County Assembly, James Serem, while witnessing the action at Cheplaskei Primary, also pledged his support for the Governor’s Cup and many other sports initiatives.
Director of Sports, Henry Mukholwe, his deputy Wilson Koros and Moiben Sub-County Administrator, Moses Kangogo were among senior government officials who also attended the games.
Winners for the ward level will be facing it off in the Governor’s Cup Volleyball Tournament – county level, which will be staged this Easter, at the Eldoret National Polytechnic.
