Soy MP David Kiplagat Laments Topdressing Fertilizer Shortage, Says 200,000 Bags of CAN En Route to North Rift

Soy Member of Parliament David Kiplagat has raised concern over a shortage of topdressing fertilizer in NCPB stores across North Rift, saying it has affected farmers during the critical planting season.

In a statement released Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Kiplagat attributed the shortfall to “disruptions in the global supply chain arising from the ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has impacted the steady supply of fertilizer to the country”.

He however noted that the government has moved to address the crisis.

The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, has taken the necessary corrective measures to address the situation,” the MP said.

According to Kiplagat, “over 200,000 bags of CAN fertilizer are currently in transit and are being distributed to NCPB stores across the North Rift region to ease the shortage and ensure farmers access the subsidized fertilizer they require”.

With the consignments expected “in the coming days”, the MP expressed optimism that “normal distribution will resume and our farmers will be able to obtain the fertilizer needed to support production and safeguard food security”.

We commend the Government for its swift intervention and commitment to addressing this challenge,” he said, adding: “As your representative, I will continue to closely follow up on this matter to ensure our farmers receive the fertilizer they require and that agricultural productivity remains on course”.

The shortage of topdressing fertilizer during planting season has been a recurring concern for farmers in the North Rift, a key grain basket region. Subsidized fertilizer through NCPB is critical for maize and wheat production in the area.
