Highest paying marathon in Africa
Aside from the main 42km race, there is also a 5km fun race for all – including children, who must be accompanied by an adult.
Eldoret City Marathon is billed as the highest paying marathon in Africa with a Ksh18 million prize money.
Winners for both men’s and women’s races get Ksh3.5 million each with the first 20 athletes in both categories also getting awarded.
The race is themed ‘Climate Action’ and is used to plant trees in an effort to conserve the environment.
So far, millions of tree seedlings have been planted in public and private institutions and forests across the county, including Kapseret and Kaptagat forests, courtesy of the marathon.
The Eldoret City Marathon has also been a key player in the ongoing construction of the modern Eldoret arboretum.
