Trans Nzoia medical officers have called off the strike that was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after successful negotiations with the county management.
The county management, led by Public Service Board Chairperson Joyce Wamalwa, County Secretary Truphosa Amere, and Finance CECM Pepela Wanjala, agreed to immediately begin addressing the doctors’ grievances.
Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDI), led by North Rift Regional Chair Dr. Ismael Aiyabei, had raised several concerns.
What issues did Trans Nzoia doctors raise?
They included failure to promote some doctors, review of promotions, remittance of statutory deductions including SHA, and payment of salary arrears following the 2024 SRC salary review, among other issues.
Dr. Pepela said the salary arrears for both medical officers and the entire county workforce had been factored into the current budget.
He said county employees would receive the arrears, amounting to KSh 116 million, within the current financial year.
“All arrears from July 2024 to February 2026 will be paid,” said Pepela.
He said the county government would communicate the payment schedule in due course.
Pepela also said the Executive was making arrangements to remit SHA contributions in advance as a risk management measure to avoid disruptions in access to healthcare.
The Public Service Board Chairperson said the process of converting 12 doctors to permanent and pensionable terms was underway.
She said the doctors would undergo a suitability test as required by law.
The return-to-work agreement also states that no officer will be victimised for participating in the strike process.
Others present during the meeting were Public Service Board Secretary Edgar Imbamba, Director of Human Resource Management Emelda Agoi, and the recently vetted Chief Officer nominee for Gender, Lucy Nyambura.
