Uasin Gishu First Lady to Women: Prioritise Breast Cancer Screening

Uasin Gishu County’s First Lady, Selina Bii, has urged women to prioritize early screening for breast cancer, stressing the importance of timely detection in the fight against the disease.

Her remarks came during a breast cancer awareness event held in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Mararen Grounds in Ziwa Ward, Soy Sub-County.

Over 1,000 women attended and received screenings during the event.

Addressing the residents, Mrs. Bii highlighted the critical role of early detection and encouraged women to promptly seek medical advice upon noticing any suspicious lumps.

Early detection is vital because it empowers women to seek the treatment they need,” she emphasized.

The First Lady also expressed concern over rising cases of gender-based violence in the region, insisting the need for women to stand together to address both health issues and social injustices.

She further urged women to visit healthcare facilities for guidance on both fronts, as access to supportive services is essential.

What’s the cost of breast cancer screening?

On his part, Chief Officer for Promotive and Preventive Health Dr. Paul Wangwe noted that free breast cancer screening services are now available at all county health facilities, with 16 of them specially equipped to treat various forms of cancer.

He further shared that a state-of-the-art mammogram machine has recently been installed in Ziwa Sub County Hospital, enhancing the region’s capacity for early cancer detection.

This year’s Breast Cancer Awareness theme, “Close the Gap: Improving Access to Breast Cancer Services and Support,” reinforces the need to expand access to quality health services and strengthen community awareness.
