Transport in several roads and streets within Eldoret town was in Monday partially disrupted as tens of junior secondary school teachers staged another round of peaceful demonstrations.

The teachers are demanding for better terms of service from the government.

According to Geoffrey Kiptoo, the Uasin Gishu Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) chapter Treasurer, the current Ksh17,000 salary per month is too little based on the current economic situation.

We are not interns and as far as we’re concerned, we have sacrificed for long enough,” said one of the JSS teachers.

The teachers from across the country took to the streets carrying placards and singing songs.

They argue that if intern doctors are demanding over Ksh200,000 in salaries, they also deserve better than their current renumeration.

The JSS teachers have also vowed not to resume work once schools open for the second term.

According to the Junior Secondary School teachers, their salary should be at least Ksh60,000 per month.

Richard Mibei, the Uasin Gishu KUPPET Secretary said the intern teachers should be employed on a permanent and pensionable term.

They are currently working on a contract basis.

Mibei further said the Teachers Service Commission should stop handling JSS teachers like quacks.
