Uasin Gishu MCAs Call for Measures to Mitigate Effects of Floods

Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly have asked the County Government to mobilize existing resources to mitigate the effects of floods.

In a motion moved by Kaptagat Member of County Assembly Jonathan Ng’etich, the ward representatives expressed concerns that recent floods had wrenched havoc in agricultural farms leading to huge loses.

According to Ng’etich, a new season for the long rains is expected soon hence need for proper planning.

In the recent past, heavy rains have been experienced in the county occasioning destruction of road infrastructure, learning institutions and other public utilities,” said the MCA when moving the motion.

The period of heavy rains from the month of July to September is fast approaching,” he added.

While supporting the motion, the MCAs present further said the county must ensure sufficient preparedness to alleviate further losses of lives and properties.

Like most parts of the country, Uasin Gishu witnessed the negative impact of heavy rainfall including floodings and the destruction of crops on farms.

At least 27 acres of agricultural land were destroyed by the floods in the Kipkenyo area with over 20 families affected in the area.

Last week, the county week said it had initiated a process aimed at opening up drainage systems in informal settlements and areas that had reported floods.

They include Langas estate and parts of Turbo as well as Cheptiret/Kipchamo in Kesses Sub-County.

We have prioritized the most affected areas in the clearing of garbage in streams to ensure free flow of water downstream,” said Roads and Infrastructure County Executive Eng Joseph Lagat.
