LlThe United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a long-standing partner in advancing Kenya’s public health sector, has started scaling down its operations in Uasin Gishu County following shifts in U.S. foreign aid policy.

In response to the impending transition, the County Government of Uasin Gishu convened a strategic meeting with USAID officials led by Jeff Lewer to evaluate the sustainability and continuity of critical health programs, particularly those focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

Speaking during the session held on Thursday , May 15, 2025, Uasin Gishu County Executive for Health Services, Abraham Serem, affirmed the county’s readiness to navigate the transition.

We have developed and are implementing mitigation strategies, including service integration and long-term sustainability plans,” he noted.

However, Serem expressed concern over a potential increase in HIV cases among the youth, an issue previously addressed through aggressive sensitization efforts led by AMPATH, a key partner supported by USAID.

Chief Officers Dr. Paul Wangwe (Preventive and Promotive Health) and Ambrose Tarus (Administration) commended AMPATH’s contributions, noting its significant role in improving health outcomes across the region.

Without AMPATH, the situation could have been dire. Their support has been instrumental in delivering longer, healthier lives to our residents,” Dr Wangwe said.

The County leaders underscored the need for a phased and well-coordinated transition strategy to prevent service disruptions, particularly in life-saving HIV/AIDS programs.

Abrupt withdrawal of donor support, they warned, could reverse years of progress.
