Were Police Officers Who Arrested Gachagua in 2021 Forced to Resign? DCI Clarifies

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has come out to respond to claims that its seven detectives had been forced to resign.

Hours after Dr William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua took an oath of office to be President and Deputy President respectively, a document spread on various social media pages claiming seven DCI officers had resigned.

The seven are alleged to have been involved in the controversial arrest of Gachagua, in July 2021, then the Mathira Member of Parliament.

In July 2022’s Deputy Presidential Debate, Gachagua said the police officers humiliated him in front of his family.

Even after sending 200 police to arrest me in Nyeri and drag me in front of wife and workers took me to Nairobi, lock me for 4 days, one and a half years later, not a shred of evidence that is why the case has not taken off,” he said.

But after his swearing-in as the second in command, it had been alleged that the officers behind his arrest had been forced to resign.

Responding to the allegations, the DCI termed them as untrue.

Pursue other interests

It noted that the said resignations were not forced.

The DCI attention has been drawn to allegations doing rounds in social media insinuating forced resignation of 7 DCI officers. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations clarifies as follows: That like in any other progressive institution, resignation of staff to pursue other interests in life is well provided for in the National Police Service, under the NPS Service Standing Orders (SSO),” read part of the statement posted on their social media pages.

Therefore, the officers reported to have resigned did so under the 24-hour rule on diverse dates last month and were not forced to leave the service as alleged,” it added.

Further, the DCI noted that the detectives who were based at different specialized units within the Directorate left to pursue their careers in the private sector as financial investigators, fraud experts, IT specialists among others.
