A routine site visit at 64 Stadium in Eldoret town on Thursday indicated a slow but steady progress.
Leading team from the construction company, the project supervising consultant and the county team at the site, the Eldoret Municipality Manager Tito Koiyet and the team appreciated the progress on the construction of the terraces, the VIP Pavilion and the green field.
Further, the team observed that the progress was slow but steady.
“Kenya is among the East African countries bidding to host AFCON 2027 and Eldoret is one of the towns to provide facilities for the competition if the bid succeeds. Along with Kipchoge Stadium, 64 Stadium would serve as a training ground for the championship,” said Koiyet.
“Sports Kenya inspection team is in town to assess progress and make recommendations on our readiness in time to host the event,” he added.
According to the consultant Team Leader Architect Joseph Mutua, the project’s physical implementation stands at 68 per cent while the funding disbursement stands at 59 per cent based on certified payment certificates.
The stadium is being constructed by the County Government of Uasin Gishu through World Bank funding.
It is estimated to cost a billion Kenyan shillings.
Once the stadium is complete, it will benefit the sportsmen and sportswomen for their training and also for competition both locally and internationally.
The 12,000-capacity stadium will host a whole set of indoor games such as badminton, Table tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, and basketball, aside from the pitch activities like football, rugby and races.
Works on the stadium have been ongoing alongside those of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, also in Eldoret Town being funded by the National Government.
