Eldoret Sports Club is ready to host Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championships.
The championships rated among the biggest in the country will be held this Sunday, January 30, 2022.
It will be the 31st edition of the race that has built a reputation for producing world champions.
Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championships are expected to attract a good number of athletes.
The athletes will compete in 6km junior women, 8km junior men, 10km senior men and women categories.
Among notable names expected to participate in the race include Brilliant Jepkorir, who won the senior women’s race in 2019, and the defending champion Daisy Cherotich.
Jepkorir participated in the National Cross Country Championships at Lobo Village, in Kapseret, last weekend, representing the Kenya Prisons and finished 11th.
Others are Eldoret City marathon champion Valary Aiyabei, Eunice Chumba, Nancy Jelagat, Irene Cheptai, Daniel Mateiko, Titus Kiprotich, and Emmanuel Bor.
Over the years, athletes who have participated in the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championships have gone ahead to shine on the global stage.
They include reigning world cross country champion Geoffrey Kamworor, Bedan Karoki, former London Marathon champion Prisca Jeptoo and women’s world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei.
This record will perhaps be an extra motivation for the participants and winners of the cross country.
The race comes at a time Eldoret town is also preparing to host the World Cross Country Championship, named after athlete Agnes Tirop who was allegedly killed by his husband.
It will be the first time Kenya is hosting this international event set to be staged at the Lobo Village in Kapseret.
Eldoret boasts of being the home to many of the world-beaters when it comes to athletics.
