United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will on Thursday, April 14, 2022, hold its party nomination to pick candidates that will fly its flag in the August 9, 2022 polls.
The party’s National Elections Board (NEB) has issued an update on the preparations for the exercise.
According to a statement issued by NEB chairperson Eng. Anthony Maina, UDA will be holding nominations in at least 36 counties across the country.
“13 counties will nominate their governor while 18 counties will be identifying their Senate candidates. 28 counties will decide on their Woman Representative candidates and 138 constituencies will be going to the polls to decide their Members of Parliament,” Mwaura said in a statement.
834 wards will also be nominating their candidates for the UDA party.
In total UDA will be conducting primaries in 981 electoral seats across the country.
There will be 15,000 polling stations.
The party which will be participating in a general election for the first time, having been formed a few months ago, is also boosting of being the first one to attract interest from international observers.
“This will be a nomination like no other. It is the first nomination exercise where international observers have shown interest in participating in it. It is also a nomination where a political party has committed to respect the will of the people,” noted the UDA National Elections Board chair.
He said the party has already acquired its own 75,000 transparent ballot boxes complete with 650,000 seals.
The UDA National Elections Board says it has recruited 47 County Returning Officers, 200 Constituency Returning officers, 21,000 Returning Officers, and 52,000 clerks that will be in charge of the nomination.
“All these officers have undergone rigorous training and are ready for duty come Thursday,” says Eng. Mwaura.
The party has also sought the assistance of 34,680 police officers to man the polling stations.
Already the UDA party leader Dr. William Ruto has assured that the nomination will be free and fair.
“We have committed to a free, fair, and democratic process. We have made all arrangements, all ballot papers dispatched and they will be in polling stations early morning,” DP Ruto said on Wednesday.
