Cancer Centre in Kitale: National Cancer Institute Team Visits Trans Nzoia Ahead Establishment of Facility at Mt Elgon Hospital

The National Cancer Institute of Kenya has visited Trans Nzoia County to assess preparations for the registration and establishment of a fully-fledged Cancer Centre at Mt Elgon Hospital, a move expected to transform cancer care in the region.

Kijana Wamalwa Teaching and Referral Hospital Board Chairman Dr Nangole said the centre is long overdue.

The testimonies from cancer survivors, caretakers and families show the urgent need. There is no reason why Trans Nzoia should not have a fully-fledged cancer centre to take care of our patients,” he said.

In addition,  Dr Nangole noted that cancer cases are rising globally and locally.

The only way to address this burden is by having centres of excellence dedicated to cancer care. Trans Nzoia cannot be left behind,” he added, reiterating Governor George Natembeya’s commitment to establishing the facility before 2027.

Is Wamalwa Kijana Hospital equipped with cancer diagnostic equipment?

He said the county is investing in modern diagnostic equipment, including an MRI machine expected at Kijana Wamalwa Hospital by mid-year.

With the MRI and CT scan already in place, there will be no reason for our people to travel outside the county for radiological diagnosis,” he explained.

Trans Nzoia County Palliative Care Lead Dr Evance Mwagi Manuthu welcomed the initiative.

We are excited to move from palliation to full treatment and diagnostics. Mt Elgon Hospital already has qualified staff, supportive nurses, nutritionists and experts. Last year, the County managed to see 122 various cancer patients, and in the three months alone since the establishment of the Mt Elgon Palliative care centre in October last year, we have seen more than 92 patients with various cancers,” he said.

National Cancer Institute officials advised the county to start with targeted cancers such as breast, cervical and haematological malignancies.

Mr Mabuko Olum said sustainability will depend on clear policies.

It is better to begin with specific pathways per cancer type rather than trying to do everything at once. Counties must also develop their own policies to ensure continuity and funding,” he said.

Are there palliative services and oncology nurses in Kitale?

Western region representative Chrisantus Wekesa assured support.

Trans Nzoia already has palliative services and oncology nurses. Establishing a cancer clinic will make it easier to move to a full cancer centre. Once the registry is in place, the county will qualify for more support, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy,” he said.

Trans Nzoia County palliative care coordinators Manuela Busara highlighted ongoing advocacy, home visits and support groups, noting that the establishment of the Trans Nzoia Cancer centre will greatly reduce congestion at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret and serve neighbouring counties.
