CS Alice Wahome, Governor Bii Tour KISIP and Affordable Housing Projects in Uasin Gishu

Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 hosted Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Housing, Public Works, and Urban Development, Alice Wahome, in Eldoret to officially launch ongoing projects under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Programme (KISIP) and assess their progress.

During the visit, CS Wahome praised Governor Bii for his proactive leadership, describing the initiatives as “transformative.”

While addressing residents in Langas ward, she highlighted the construction of a 2km tarmac road, along with stormwater drainage and lighting, which will significantly enhance living conditions in informal settlements.

Additionally, the CS committed to resolving longstanding titling issues affecting the residents of Langas.

Governor Bii expressed satisfaction with the advancement of affordable housing projects aligned with the President’s objectives.

Their tour included key sites in Pioneer, Kidiwa, and Railway City, where they observed significant progress, including the construction of 2,260 low-cost housing units in Pioneer and 220 units in Kapsuswa, Soy Constituency.

These projects aim to improve housing availability and create job opportunities for local youth, thus promoting regional growth.

Highlighting KISIP’s impact, Governor Bii noted improvements in road infrastructure, drainage systems, and green spaces, stating, “Our journey under this initiative has benefited numerous settlements, enhancing economic and social livelihoods.

He also announced plans to install seven high masts in key areas to improve security and support a 24-hour economy.

Future development plans for Uasin Gishu

With an approved funding allocation of Ksh1.4 billion, Governor Bii remains optimistic about future developments, including upgrading six townships to municipalities, which could unlock additional urban funding for further initiatives.

County Executive Committee member for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Janeth Kosgei, reaffirmed the department’s commitment to KISIP and the Affordable Housing Programme, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with stakeholders to uplift residents and ensure equitable access to resources.

The tour was also attended by CECM Eng. Joseph Lagat (Roads), Eng. Lucy Ngendo (Sports), C.O Urban Development Julius Koech, and MCAs Francis Muya (Langas ward) and David Letting (Kipkaren).
