A Member of the County Assembly (MCA) in Uasin Gishu has come out to reveal that he has never stepped in a classroom since he left Early Childhood Education Centre (ECDE) in 1970.
However, the Kipkenyo MCA in Kapseret Constituency David Letting ‘Kokwas’ says he has a KCPE certificate.
Addressing the press on Thursday, June 22, 2023, Letting who is serving his first term as an MCA noted that he sat for KCPE in 2000 at Uasin Gishu Primary School and scored 150 marks out of the possible 500 marks.
“Mimi kama Kokwas, nilitoka nursery 1970 na mwaka 2000 mimi nilifanya mtihani ya Standard 8 na sijawai ingia darasa ingine na nilifanya KCPE standard 8 na nilipata 150 marks,” the MCA told journalists.
“I appreciate that because according to my knowledge, I did my best,” he added.

Letting is a former councillor. He unsuccessfully vied for the Kipenyo MCA seat in 2017 as a Jubilee candidate but lost to independent candidate Hillary Ng’etich.
However, in 2022, he won the seat as a UDA candidate.
But despite never stepping foot in class since ECDE in 1970, the MCA revealed that he has already registered to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination next year.
Sudi’s academic certificate case
He made the revelation while defending Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi over claims that he has fake academic papers.
Sudi is facing charges over the matter which is still active in court.
However, the flamboyant ward representative argues that nobody should question MP Sudi’s academic papers as it was not a must for him to sit in a class to have the certificates.
“I have never stepped in a class but I have registered for KCSE. If you went looking for where I schooled, you will never get them because I did not go to any,” noted the MCA popularly known as Kokwas.

And as he prepares to sit for the KCSE next year, the MCA says he is only interested in getting the certificate, even if he scores a grade E.
He further argues that someone’s educational background should never be a basis on which an individual’s ability to be a leader is determined.
“Sudi is serving his third term as an MP and he has been a good leader yet you claim he has no papers. If he was illiterate, would he manage to get the three terms? People do not need education, they want development and we’re happy with what he has done whether he went to school or not,” the Kipkenyo MCA said.
“Personally, I have not gone to school but I have been elected and MCA, and serving my people very well,” he added.
Before the 2022 general elections, the courts declared sections of the Elections Act that required candidates to have a certain education threshold unconstitutional.
As it is now, an individual seeking to be a Member of Parliament, Governor or MCA does not need degrees to vie.
