Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor, Eng. John Barorot on Saturday held a consultative meeting with the leadership of the Uasin Gishu Business Group in Eldoret town.
The meeting was aimed at discussing the best ways for how both parties can support each side in the ongoing sanitation measures at the wholesale market.
This follows a recent ugly confrontation between a section of traders, street family members and law enforcers.

During the courtesy call in his office, the Deputy Governor welcomed the move by the Uasin Gishu business community to support the county government’s initiative.
It has been established that goons and some mature members of the street families have taken control of the market and have been carrying out criminal activities that need to be stopped.
“Our responsibility is to provide a conducive environment for all the traders we are doing our best to see to it that the market is sanitised. We are also looking into ways of ensuring all other markets across the county are well utilised,” said Eng. Barorot.

The DG also noted that it had come to the attention of the county government that some traders had refused to operate in their designated points.
Goons at the market
It was further noted that some goons have taken advantage of the situation to cause havoc in the market that now needs refurbishment.
The leadership of the traders under an umbrella of Uasin Gishu Group led by their chairman Shadrack Ndegwa pledged that they would support the county government to flush out the goons.

The group also promised to help identify the goons’ suspected ring leaders and allow the clean-up exercise and other measures to sanitise the market to continue undisrupted.
“We assure the county government that we are going to cooperate during the seven days of sanitising the market and provide any leading information regarding all those involved in creating havoc in the market,” said Ndegwa.
