Uasin Gishu Governor Dr Jonathan Bii, on Friday held a meeting with the County Disaster Management to discuss key measures aimed at averting disasters caused by floods even as heavy rains pound the country.
Speaking to the press in Eldoret, the county boss advised residents to be cautious during this season to ensure their safety is prioritized.
“I want to urge everyone to be extra cautious even as they go about their normal activities,” said Dr Bii, adding that parents also need to monitor their children, lest they engage and play with water.
Governor Bii also asked all headteachers to do an assessment of the effects of the heavy rainfall in their schools and give a report so that the county government can support the maintenance of damaged infrastructure.

He further advised residents not to cross overflowing rivers and avoid flooded places.
The Governor added that the county has assisted 22 households out of the 72 who were affected by the Cheptiret flash floods. He urged more well-wishers to support the affected families.
Response to emergencies
Dr Bii emphasized the importance of putting proactive measures in place to respond quickly to emergencies, including fuelling and deploying county machinery on the ground.
Further, the Governor noted that his government through the Department of Roads, Transport and Public Works will continue to open and expand drainage systems and that the devolved unit had identified 28 dams which require immediate attention to avoid disasters.

Residents are also advised to use the emergency hotline: 0710646464 or dial 1199 for quick response.
Among those present were Dr. Eddyson Nyale (County Commissioner), Eng. John Barorot (Deputy Governor), Mr Oscar Okumu (Kenya Red Cross Head of North Rift Region), County Executive Committee members and other senior county officials.
