Eldoret’s Julius Kitur Elected ‘Chairman of Chairmen of Municipalities’

Eldoret Municipality Board chair, Julius Kitur, has been elected to head the Urban Boards  – a caucus that brings together all the urban management in Kenya.

Kitur’s election into the helm of the municipality boards comes to affirm his commitment to Eldoret Municipality and a leadership that has seen Eldoret positioning itself as Kenya’s soon-to-be fifth city.

I am honoured to be elected to be the Chair of Chairmen of Urban Boards in Kenya, it’s a win for Uasin Gishu even as we await the City status,” said a happy Kitur.

On his part, the Eldoret Municipality Manager, Tito Koiyet, congratulated the chair terming him as a go-getter, an inspiration and a great believer in urbanization in Kenya.

We are proud of our Board Chair for being Elected to chair the Urban Boards Chairmen. His determination to forge forward in urban management leadership has helped our municipality to get closer to being a City,” said Koiyet.

The Chairmanship position confirms that Eldoret has made big steps in growth to affirm that it is indeed the cheerleader – the City of Champions.

8th Devolution Conference

Eldoret is anticipating getting the city status soon.

Already a Uasin Gishu County Assembly resolution to give the city status conferment plan a green light has been presented before the Senate.

It was anticipated that the Senate will have dispensed the matter before the town hosts the 8th Devolution Conference that starts on August 15, 2023.

As per the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census, Eldoret is the fifth most populated urban area in the country after Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Ruiru.

The population was 289,380 in the 2009 Census, and it is currently the fastest-growing town in Kenya with 475,716 people according to the 2019 National Census.

Eldoret was on course to be named Kenya’s fourth city but was edged out by Nakuru in 2021.
