The Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (Eldowas) has stepped up efforts to plant more tree seedlings in all its water catchment areas.
Peter Biwott, the Eldowas Managing Director says tree planting is part of their program aimed at enabling the company to be sustainable.
And to ensure the success of the initiative, the company has been planting seedlings in all its treatment works, in partnership with locals.
The latest tree planting exercise was at Kipkenyo Waste Water Treatment Works on Tuesday, August 30, 2022.

During the exercise, Biwott says at least 5,400 tree seedlings were planted, which is part of the over 100,000 tree seedlings that the company has planted only in August 2022.
“Today with locals in our neighbourhood at our Kipkenyo Waste Water TWorks, we planted 5,400 tree seedlings as part of 100,000 we have planted during August,” said the Eldowas MD.
“In 2022, we have planted about 150,000 seedlings in our catchment area,” he added.
Beautification program
But with the latest addition of the tree seedlings planted, Biwott says the company mandated to supply water and offer sewerage services within the Eldoret Municipality now has trees worth over Ksh70 million.

“@eldowasco biological assets is worth Kshs.70m so far,” he said.
Further, the MD revealed that the company is implementing an initiative in which it is planting tree seedlings in all Treatment Works as well as beautification programs.
“We are currently planting tree seedlings in all our TWorks as well as beautification programme where we aim to increase our forest coverage & create sustainability in our company. Water and sanitation for all is a critical country and County target as we scale up climate action,” Biwott said.
Eldowas has been working with other stakeholders in advocating for tree planting in a move it hopes will help address climate change effects that have impacted rain patterns in its water catchment areas.
The company depends on water from various dams and in the event of low rainfall, water production is usually affected.

Currently, Eldowas produces only 43 million cubic meters of water, against the daily demand of 60 million cubic meters for the locals which forces it to ration water supply to customers.
