Elgeyo Marakwet: At Least 15 People Killed in Deadly Kerio Valley Landslides

Several people are feared dead following landslides reoriged in Kerio Valley Sub-County, Elgeyo Marakwet County early on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

Reports indicate that at least 10 bodies have been retrieved from houses that had been covered in mud.

Several others are still unaccounted for.

At least 10 have been confirmed dead following the landslides in Kerio Valley.

Kerio Valley Sub-County Police Commander Zablon Okoyo confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing.

Okoyo said the landslide were as a result of heavy rains witnessed in the area overnight.

The Chesongoch and Kabetwa areas which are the most affected are currently inaccessible after the flood cut of all major roads.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich said the government has already mobilised air support to ensure rescuers access the affected area.

With the support of waziri Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen and the Chief of Defence forces Gen Khariri we have choppers enroute to arrive in few minutes to evacuate the injured being stabilised by Health team on the ground accompanied by Red cross paramedics,” Rotich said.

The Kerio Valley region witnessed heavy downpour that led to the flashfloods.

His also noted that West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has sent ambulances through Sigor as all roads are cut off.

Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu County road machinery are being mobilised through Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim.

All the leaders playing various roles and MTRH CEO is on standby with his team. All county executive under instruction to mobilise food and non food Items to be airlifted after all patients have been rescued,” the county boss said.
