Governor Natembeya Threatens to Sack Striking Doctors, Clinical Officers

Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya has threatened to sack striking doctors and clinical officers

Addressing a gathering of over 3,000 employees of Trans Nzoia County government, Natembeya said his administration has fulfilled all the doctors and clinical requirements and therefore their strike is not justifiable.

I have implemented all the doctors issues apart from promotion of nine doctors. We did an intent long time a go and their promotion is pending before our County Public Service Board. Clinical officers have absolutely no issue because I have employed graduate clinical officers,” Natembeya said.

The county boss stated that it is in bad faith for doctors who are members of Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) to participate in a strike because of standing in solidarity with their colleagues in other counties.

He also revealed that all the striking medics will miss their April 2024 pay and their risk loosing their jobs from May if they don’t resume to their work places.

The tough-talking County boss said after the elapse of his verbal notice, he will source for the services of qualified medics from Uganda.

Because East African community protocols allows free movement of labour,  goods and services, I will just declare vacancies and they will just apply and absorb them and they will work without even without your so called certifications, Mandera has employed doctors from Ethiopia,” he said.

Natembeya faulted the doctors’ union KMPDU, for demanding payment of medical interns over Ksh 200,000 a month.

You want us to pay an intern 206,000 shillings a month and yet that internship will qualify them to get practicing certificates earning even more than nurses who train them,” he added.

Natembeya however agreed with KMPDU that the ministry of health should pay all the pending arrears and posting of interns.
