A ray of hope is beaming for children with autism challenges in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
This is after the county’s Department of Health partnered with Smiles for Speech- a United States-based organization that supports children with disabilities by providing access to developmentally appropriate resources and ensuring long-term sustainable solutions given by expert professional volunteers from across the World.
Through the partnership, several gadgets are set to be distributed by the organization across the county including speech-language therapy books, therapy balls, scooter board for sensory integration challenges among other aiding gadgets.
The target group includes kids with speech challenges, those living with autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.
Jeanette Washington, a speech pathologist expert from Smiles for Speech said the program will ensure all kids with challenges will be attended to from those seeking medical services at Item County Referral Hospital (ICRH), those in special schools to those neglected in the villages.
Health and Sanitation Chief Officer Mary Kipchumba said the program is timely and will go a long way in impacting the lives of the children with challenges.
Officials present from the Smiles for Speech organization included Kim Formby-occupational therapist, Sandy Dorsey – speech pathologist, Regina Keino project coordinator, ICRH Medical Superintendent Benjamin Kimaile, and Administrator Abigael Kipkurgat.
