In a major move to bolster national security and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has officially commenced construction of a new ammunition production line at the Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation (KOFC) in Eldoret.
Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri presided over the event, which began with the 73rd KOFC Board of Directors Meeting before transitioning to the groundbreaking ceremony.
The initiative marks a critical milestone in Kenya’s strategy to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing and ensure a resilient, mission-ready force.

The new facility is part of a broader three-phase modernisation programme aimed at upgrading KOFC’s production capabilities. With the first phase already underway, the project targets full completion by the 2027/2028 Financial Year.
Key projections for the upgraded facility include:
- A 35 per cent increase in overall production capacity.
- Enhanced consistency in manufacturing high-quality small arms ammunition.
- Production of related auxiliary products to directly support KDF operations.
During the board meeting, senior officials reviewed the corporation’s strategic progress and assessed ongoing initiatives designed to meet emerging operational requirements.
Speaking to KOFC personnel after the ceremony, General Kahariri emphasised that expanding local defence manufacturing is no longer optional but a strategic imperative.
“The modernisation initiative highlights the growing role of the defence industry in strengthening national security by providing dependable, locally manufactured capabilities that support military preparedness,” the CDF stated.
He urged staff to maintain core military values of discipline, professionalism, and dedication, noting that these principles are essential for positioning KOFC as a critical pillar of Kenya’s defence architecture.
The shift toward indigenous production aims to reduce dependence on external supply chains, ensure a reliable flow of critical defence equipment, enhance operational resilience for the KDF and secure long-term strategic sustainability.
With this new production line, Kenya takes a significant step toward a self-sufficient defence industry, ensuring that its forces are equipped with the necessary tools to respond to evolving security demands without external constraints.
