Kenya Police Officers will be deployed to Haiti within weeks, President William Ruto has announced.
The county is planning to send the officers to the Caribbean nation in a move aimed at addressing the widespread non-state armed groups violence.
According to President Ruto, the deployment of the officers is in the final touches. They are expected to fly out as soon as next week.
“The people of Haiti are maybe waiting, by the grace of God, that probably by next week or the other week, we shall send our police officers to restore peace,” Ruto said on Sunday during a thanksgiving service in Nakuru County.
The deployment comes despite an existing court order that declared the plan unconstitutional.
Kenya will send at least 1,000 officers for the mission in Haiti to overcome gang violence which has been a threat in the Caribbean region for a long time.
Reports indicate that the gan killed more than five hundred people last year and forced tens of thousands to leave the city this year.
A United Nations Security Council approved the mission in October last year but delayed the mission in January.
A High Court ruling indicated that the government did not have the authority to send the officers abroad without a prior agreement.
Later, a section of opposition leaders filed a case to block the mission.
The court is expected to deliver its verdict on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
Aside from Kenya, Benin and Chad are other countries from Africa that have shown willingness to join the Haiti mission.
