List of 19 Roads Kenyan Government Plans to Dual

President William Ruto has unveiled his government’s ambitious plan to scale up the country’s transport and logistics sector.

In his third State of the Nation Address on Thursday, November 20, 2025, Ruto said the Ministry of Roads and Transport had already mapped out a comprehensive network of 2,500 highways for dualing and 28,000km of roads to be tarmaced in the next 10 years.

He also revealed that the government will onboard private-public partnership in the modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Mombasa and Lamu ports.

When will dualling of Rironi–Mau Summit road begin?

This work is already progressing. Next week, I will launch the dualling of the 170-kilometre Rironi–Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Summit road. On the same day, we will break ground on the dualling of the 58-kilometre Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha road,” the President said.

The gridlock that paralyses these roads every day—especially on weekends and holidays—will soon be history,” he added.

Which Kenyan highways are planned for dualling?

Ruto also listed 19 other roads he said has been earmarked for dualing..

They include:

  1. Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi
  2. Machakos Junction–Mariakani
  3. Mau Summit–Kericho–Kisumu
  4. Kisumu–Busia
  5. Mau Summit–Eldoret– Malaba
  6. Athi River–Namanga
  7. Karatina–Nanyuki–Isiolo
  8. Makutano–Embu–Meru—Maua
  9. Mtwapa–Malindi
  10. Mombasa- Lunga Lunga
  11. Kericho—Kisii—Migori—Isebania
  12. Nakuru—Nyahururu—Karatina
  13. Kisii—Oyugis—Ahero
  14. The Northern Bypass
  15. James Gichuru Road
  16. Bomas—Karen—Ngong, Bomas—Ongata Rongai—Kiserian
  17. Ngong—Isinya
  18. Naivasha–Kikuyu
Regular Nakuru-Nairobi Highway traffic congestion will be a thing of the past once the road is dualled.

This infrastructure drive will also include extending the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Kisumu and eventually to Malaba beginning in January 2026,” the President said.
