Maize Price Can Hit Ksh4,000 Per Bag With Value Addition – Prof Julius Bitok

Uasin Gishu gubernatorial aspirant Amb. Prof Julius Bitok has welcomed move by NCPB to increase maize price.

The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, announced that it will be purchasing a 90-kilogram bag of maize at Ksh3,000.

This is a Ksh300 increase from the previous price.

But even as he welcomed the new price, Amb. Bitok said there was still room for improvement.

He noted that farmers deserve better.

According to Amb. Bitok, if value addition is adapted by farmers in the county, the price can rise to Ksh4,000 per 90-kilogram bag or more.

The Ksh 3000 for 90kg bag announced by NCPB is a welcomed move but we are not yet out of the woods,” said the Uasin Gishu gubernatorial aspirant.

Our farmers deserve a better price and its my conviction that if we adopt value addition as a county we shall hit Ksh 4000 or more per 90kg bag,” he added.

Prof Bitok who is currently the Kenyan ambassador to Pakistan further lamented that poor prices for agricultural products has forced parents to opt for Harambees to raise fees for their children.

He noted that in the past, when prices were good, farmers would depended on Agriculture to raise school fees.

It is through maize farming that most of us were schooled & that has been the trend in North Rift specifically Uasin Gishu until our farmers were subjected to very poor prices that brought them negative returns.

In that situation most parents faced difficulty in raising school fees forcing us to adopt Harambee as a way of supporting students from our community,” noted Amb. Bitok.

The gubernatorial aspirant has since started Amb. Bitok Foundation to support students from humble background continue with their learning.
