Moi University has announced the resumption of lectures effective Monday, December 2, 2024. This follows the signing of a Return-to-Work Formula by the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) and the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
In an internal memo dated December 2, 2024, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics, Research, Extension, and Student Affairs, Prof. I.N Kimengi, informed all students of the agreement’s immediate effect.
Prof. Kimengi stated, “It is imperative that all students attend lectures regularly as we endeavour to return to our normal academic schedule.”
The memo was also copied to the Vice-Chancellor and all Deans, ensuring the information was disseminated across all departments. This move is expected to restore normalcy and academic progress at Moi University after a period of disruption.
On Saturday, the staff called off their three-month strike after the government agreed to provide Ksh 500 million as part of the payments for the salary arrears.
Moi University has been struggling to clear the arrears running to over Ksh 8 billion.
Last week, the institution council blamed the financial crisis on to decline in privately sponsored students following the 2016 KCSE reforms and the government’s introduction of the differentiated unit cost model of university funding that had seen government capitation grants reduce from an anticipated 80% to about 38% of the cost of an academic program.
