Learning at Moi University is finally set to resume. This is after the institution signed a return-to-work agreement with striking staff.
The staff, both teaching and non-teaching have been on strike for over three months, crippling operations at the Uasin Gishu-based public university.
But after months of talks between parties involved, the strike has now been called off.
Workers union officials announced the end on the strike on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
What was agreed for Moi University staff?
The deal, brokered by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba will see the government provide Ksh500 million to Moi University to facilitate payment of staff salaries.
“The students and workers have suffered because of wrong decisions they did not participate in making,” said CS Ogamba.
Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary General Constantine Wasonga and KUSU National Secretary James Mogaka were present during the agreement signing.
“To the workers, let’s go back to work on Monday, and although we did not get all that we wanted, at least we got something. Even the tail is meat,” Wasonga said.
He also assured Moi University staff that the government had clearly indicated how it would pay the Ksh 8.6 billion they are demanding.
What the agreement means for Moi University students
The deal will come as good news to hundreds of learners who have remained at home for the larger part of the semester coming to an end.
Intresting, none of the current over 5,000 first-years have stepped foot in a claclas.
Moi University’s main campus in Kesses and other campuses in Nairobi and Mombasa are now expected to return to normal operations on Monday.
