The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has advised motorists planning to use the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway to consider alternative routes.
This follows a traffic congestion currently being witnessed on the busy highway.
In a statement on Friday, August 29, 2025, KeNHA noted the traffic congestion started on the night of Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The congestion has been experienced between Naivasha and the Kikopey area.
“The Authority regrets to bring to the attention of the public that from around 2030 hrs yesterday, congestion developed along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway. This was worsened by lane indiscipline, which resulted in a traffic gridlock that is currently being experienced between Naivasha and Kikopey,” KeNHA said in part of the statement.

The agency also noted that the traffic congestion was related to the National Youth Service (NYS) pass-out parade held on Thursday.
“The increase in traffic could also be attributed to a high number of motorists who travelled to attend yesterday’s NYS pass-out parade in Gilgil,” KeNHA said.
However, the authority said it was working closely with the traffic police to help ease the situation. Normal traffic flow is expected to resume gradually.

Meanwhile, motorists have been urged to observe lane discipline and avoid overlapping, as it will make it impossible to ease the congestion.
Additionally, KeNHA has advised anyone intending to travel between Nairobi and Nakuru to consider using the alternative routes provided. They include the Gilgil-Olkalou-Dundori-Lanet road and the Flyover-Njambini-Olkalou-Dundori-Lanet Road.
