The government is targeting to train at least 3,000 officers and managers of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions across the country on income-generating activities.
According to Kenya School of TVET Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Edwin Tarno, the program that started in June 2022 targets TVET top managers, including Chief Principals, Heads of Departments and Finance Officers.
Speaking during the training at the Eldoret National Polytechnic, Dr Tarno said the initiative was informed by UNESCO research that discovered gaps in the management of TVETs.
“We have trained principals, their deputies down to estate officers and income generating managers. In the next few months, we will be training heads of departments and finance officers,” said the Kenya School of TVET boss.
He noted that the training targets 3,115 TVET managers.
“We are hoping this training is going to have a positive impact on how institutions are going to be run,” he added.
Self-reliant
The government has lately been asking public institutions of higher learning to focus on coming up with income-generating activities.
This is in a bid to ensure they are self-reliant.
Speaking at the same event, TVET Principal Secretary Dr Esther Muoria expressed optimism at the institutions’ ability to be self-reliant.
“We are encouraging them to become income generating centres and that is being done like hospitality you go to many of these institutions and you can be able to sit down in a very nice environment and you can be served with food and that way we’re generating income,” the PS said.
She further affirmed the readiness of TVET institutions to absorb the huge number of KCSE candidates whose results were announced recently.
But based on the results, a huge number of the candidates would end up in TVET and other middle-level colleges, with only 173,345 scoring direct university entry grades which are C+ and above.
There were 841,416 candidates that sat for the 2022 KCSE.
Further, in readiness for the huge enrolment to TVET institutions, the PS revealed that the government has given a green light for the employment of additional 1,300 trainers.
