Revealed: Number of Uasin Gishu Boys Hospitalised Following Circumcision Complications

The Department of Health in Uasin Gishu has issued an update over the number of initiates affected by circumcision complications.

Uasin Gishu News last week reported that at least three initiates had died while several others had been hospitalised.

In a latest update from the county’s Health Executive Dr Abraham Serem, at least 29 initiates are in hospital.

The number of deaths due to the said complications was however not revealed.

But Deputy Governor Eng John Barorot told a media briefing that there were numerous fatalities reported across the county.

As a measure to ensure such situation does no reoccur in future, the deputy county boss revealed that they are planning to introduce mandatory basic medical checks before the initiation can take place.

The County is now fully committed to implementing better practices to ensure the safety and well-being of initiates,” the DG said

He pointed out that the medical assessments will help identify any potential health risks and determine the suitability of each boy for the process.

By adhering to these precautionary measures, the County hopes to minimize the chances of complications and ensure a safer initiation experience for all participants.

In addition, a specialized team has been selected to guide Uasin Gishu County in improving the circumcision initiation process.

An earlier report prepared by medical officers that conducted site visits to shrines where they boys were been kept revealed that poor hygiene and contaminated food and water was some of the reasons behind the deaths and complications.
