Trans Nzoia: 10-Day Free Seed Distribution Program Launched

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya Wednesday launched a 10-day free seed distribution aimed at accelerating food production.

The Ksh100 million initiative expected to benefit more than 103,000 vulnerable farmers during the start of the planting season is expected to boost food sufficiency.

The Governor who earlier presided over the ploughing and planting of seeds for the Widow Leah Wanyama expressed determination that the seed distribution initiative will mark a new transformational journey paving a new path towards social-economic advancement.

Governor Natembeya highlighted that Trans Nzoia County had put a staggering Ksh100 million to resuscitate the Agricultural sector.

He further called for better timing which he said was the best agricultural practice.

Elimu Bursary scheme

In addition, the governor stressed his commitment to boosting the standards of education, saying the Ksh150 million Elimu Bursary scheme will be launched to oversee smooth learning.

He however posed a challenge to school heads and asked them to stop sending away children for school fees.

Let our head teachers leave this tendency of sending children home for fees. I will be having a meeting with the head Teachers next week to discuss the way forward,” he said.

Governor Natembeya further underscored his commitment to economically emancipating residents wishing to excel in life through the Nawiri fund.

He said despite concerted efforts to economically empower locals the community had resorted to becoming lazy with the male folk loitering on markets playing droughs and leaving farm work to Women.

On lack of water, the Governor said a borehole in the vicinity will be Splashed on in addition to having a borehole installed.

Trans Nzoia School Milk Program

The County boss revealed that the much-awaited free School milk program to be launched in the coming week will help all Early Child Education (ECD) learners retained in Schools.

The Governor who also distributed certified seeds to over 4,0000 farmers at the Masaba Cooperative Stores revealed plans to renumerate all Community Health Promoters all their eight months emoluments in the Coming Week.

He said a Contractor to rehabilitate the Ngoya bridge had been identified.

A contract for construction of the Ngoya bridge has already been identified and we expect that work will be starting in earnest,” he said.

The distribution exercise was winded up in Birunda with Governor Natembeya calling for the collaboration of farmers in planting certified seed from licensed stockists.

He also warned the farmers against selling and washing the treated seed for human consumption.

Meanwhile, Governor Natembeya posed a challenge to graduates to stop over-reliance on the diminishing white-collar jobs and concentrate on farming which is the highest-earning sector in the Country today.

Nabiswa MCA Martin Jamanoor Waswa and his Keiyo ward Counterpart Kennedy Mughush hailed the Governor for the timely launch of the Mbegu initiative and challenged residents to plant on time.

Jamanoor said ward representatives had in unison agreed to compliment the Governor’s efforts through the issuance of fertilizer.

What the Governor has done is quite impressive. We are collaboratively supporting his efforts to make Trans Nzoia food-reliant,” said Jamanoor.
