Trans Nzoia Bukusu Elders, Youths Warn Against Plan to Impeach Governor Natembeya

A section of the Bukusu council of elders and youths in Trans Nzoia has warned against plans to impeach Governor George Natembeya.

Addressing the press at Kitale Museum, the elders, led by council chairperson, Peter Masinde, said the impeachment of Natembeya would have regrettable consequences.

Masinde further said there are no solid and justifiable grounds to warrant the removal of the County boss by impeachment.

We want to warn our members of the County Assembly that they should not dare to impeach Natembeya because we will also mobilise the electorates to deal with them at the ward level,” he said.

Dressed in Bukusu traditional regalia, Kolia Chakali said the MCAs should respect the will of the people of Trans Nzoia.

Natembeya was elected by over 150,000 voters. How can MCAs who were elected by about 2,000 people think of removing a performing Governor?” he asked.

Another elder Eliud Wafula, said they are willing and ready to broker a truce between Natembeya and the MCAs.

We, the elders of this great County are available and prepared to help resolve any outstanding issues between Natembeya and our MCAs so that we don’t go impeachment way,” Wafula said.

The elders’ sentiments were echoed by some youth leaders including Janet Silali, Dennis Juma and Ann Awinja who unanimously said the scheme to impeach Natembeya was meant to clip his political wings and affect the delivery of his campaign manifesto.

We know they have realized that our Governor’s political star is fast rising and they want to kill it. We are telling them that we won’t allow them and trying that stupidity will amount to killing their political careers,” Juma warned.

For close to two weeks, there have been reports on social media that Trans Nzoia County MCAs are scheming to impeach Natembeya as soon as they come back from recess in February 2025.

But over the weekend, former Cherang’any Constituency lawmaker Wesley Korir called on MCAs to allow Natembeya to serve his first term in peace.

The people of the cosmopolitan county of Trans Nzoia gave Natembeya a five-year mandate. We ask our MCAs to wait for 2027 general elections and send him home if they feel he has not performed what is required of him,” Korir urged.
